Jasion Patrol 52–Power,Pedals, And Price Tag 1/3rd of a Surron!

A Budget E-Moto With Pedals That Finally Performs!

You might know Jasion for their tame lineup of E-bikes: Things like the Hunter and Thunder. Folding, and regular fat tire bikes are what I knew Jasion for, but today, they just released something that really shakes things up. Their new Patrol 52.

It’s their first E-moto style bike, and it comes with a twist that not even Surron offers: Pedals!

On top of the cool E-moto looks, you also get a 52V 30Ah battery, 4000W direct drive hub motor, and a price tag that could buy you 1 sur-ron or 3 Patrol 52’s; Just $1599. So, is Jasion’s first attempt at an E-moto worth your money? Today we’re finding out!

First Impressions

Right away, the Patrol 52 looks the part. The black-and-yellow color scheme works, the frame looks clean, and it has that proper e-moto stance without trying too hard. It doesn’t look cheap, and more importantly, it doesn’t feel cheap either. The frame is steel, the welds look decent, and the overall bike has a solid, confidence-inspiring feel to it.

I also really like the size. At 5’9″, the Patrol fits me about perfectly. It feels like a true mid-size dirt bike. The seat is wide and supportive, and it ended up being one of the more comfortable e-bike seats I’ve been on. That matters more than people think, especially once you end up riding way longer than you planned.

And on my first ride, I was pleasantly surprised by the ride comfort and the responsiveness of the throttle. It is an eager bike, but not over powering. You can fully mash the throttle without worry of accidental wheelies.

I am a big fan of these hybrid dirt bikes with pedals, especially the size of the Patrol 52.

Performance

The Patrol 52 is powered by a 52V 30Ah battery and a 70A controller, with the battery rated for 80A discharge, so even though it’s a hub bike, it’s still sending real power to the rear wheel. On the road, I saw about 42–43 mph, which is seriously impressive at this price. That puts it right in the mix with bikes that cost a lot more.

Now, the power delivery is different from a mid-drive. It doesn’t smack you in the face with torque, and it’s not really trying to be a wheelie machine. In fact, Jasion seems to have tuned it so it eases into the power pretty nicely off the line. That means it feels approachable and controlled, but still quick. You’re not going to whiskey-throttle yourself off the trail, but you’re also not going to be bored.

It’s one of those bikes that just feels good everywhere. Fast enough to be exciting, but not so aggressive that it becomes tiring.

The Patrol 52 uses a direct-drive rear hub motor instead of a mid-drive, and that completely changes the character of the bike. Most e-motos in this style use mid-drives, which usually bring more torque and more noise. This bike is the opposite. It’s almost completely silent, which is great because listening to a loud chain on a mid-drive can get fatiguing. You twist the throttle and it just takes off without all the whine and mechanical drama you usually get from a mid-drive setup.

Braking felt great also, but could be better if they used DOT hydraulic moto brakes like on other E-Motos. Not a deal breaker, but mineral oil probably won’t hold up in heavy duty, repeated hard braking situations.

Off-Road Ride Quality

The front fork is compression adjustable, the rear coil shock feels solid, and the whole bike just handles bumps and rough sections really well. It’s not Sur-Ron-level suspension, but it’s absolutely good enough to have a blast on trails, fields, and rough pavement. The 19-inch front and 17-inch rear wheel setup gives it real dirt-bike proportions, and it feels stable and planted when you’re moving.

I ended up spending hours on this thing because it was just plain fun. That’s probably the biggest compliment I can give it. Some bikes are good on paper. This one actually makes you not want to stop riding. But unfortunately, your fun may get cut a bit short, like mine did…

Range

The Patrol 52 has a decently big battery on paper, so I was expecting a little more range than I ended up getting. In my test, I got about 26 miles before the battery fully died, and that included a mix of faster riding and trail use. I wasn’t riding it hard a lot, so expect less when pushing the bike. Not terrible range, but I still expected a bit more from a 30Ah pack.

That said, it’s not really a dealbreaker. The reason range takes a hit is obvious: the bike is pulling a lot of current through that rear motor. Range and speed are usually mutually exclusive, and if you want a fast bike, it probably won’t be a long range bike.

Pros

  • Much more fun than expected
  • Fast for the money, with real 42+ mph performance
  • Very quiet direct-drive hub motor
  • Comfortable seat and great overall fit
  • Good suspension for the price
  • Strong brakes and a solid throttle feel
  • Looks clean and feels well-built

Cons

  • Range was a little lower than expected
  • Bicycle-style bar setup isn’t ideal for an e-moto
  • Kickstand holds the bike too upright
  • Pedals are basically there just to say you have them
  • Rear wheel/tire service looks annoying

The Things I Didn’t Love

There are a few quirks here.

The first is the bicycle-style headset and bar setup. Since it uses more of a traditional bike stem arrangement, if you drop the bike, the bars can get knocked out of alignment. A more moto-style setup would be better on something like this.

The second is the kickstand. It’s sturdy, but it holds the bike a little too upright. Since the Patrol is heavy, it doesn’t take much to tip it over if the wind catches it or you park on uneven ground.

Also, while it technically has pedals, they’re mostly there for appearances and legal gray-area. This is not a bike you’re going to pedal meaningfully. It’s heavy, awkward to pedal, and it seemingly doesn’t have a pedal assist sensor so the motor can assist you when pedaling. This is a throttle bike, plain and simple.

And finally, rear tire changes look like they’re going to be a pain. There is no disconnect for the motor on my bike, so you will have to unplug it from the controller. Not a huge issue day one, but worth mentioning.

Final Verdict

The Jasion Patrol 52 ended up being one of those bikes that won me over the longer I rode it. On paper, I thought it would be decent. In reality, it turned out to be a really fun, really well-priced little e-moto that does a great job of blending bike and dirt-bike traits.

No, it’s not perfect. I’d love a little more range, a better cockpit setup, and a less awkward kickstand. But at $1,599, this thing makes a strong case for itself. If you want a fast, quiet, reasonably priced e-moto with pedals that doesn’t feel cheap, the Patrol 52 is absolutely worth a look.
